Sten Studio MAWD

Explorations of memory, technology, utopianism, sustainability and the future ahead for the design world at large.

Miami Design Week once again affirmed its position as a global nexus for creativity, bringing together the worlds of design, art, architecture, and experiential culture. From the energy of Design Miami to the expansiveness of Art Basel and Untitled, the week unfolded as a layered exploration of materials, craftsmanship, and imagination — with standout contributions from leading brands and emerging voices.

In line with MAWD's focus on experience-centric design philosophies, several artists presented notable installations directly facing the sea, providing meditative spaces to experience not only embodied architecture, but poetic ideas. Notable installations include Pilar Zeta's "The Observer Effect," a compilation of eight iridescent archways, reaching out from the The Shelborne By Proper towards the ocean. Following MAWD's engagement with Es Devlin's monumental installation "Library of Light" at this past year's Milan Design Week, our team was happy to re-engage with the British Artist's work through her widely acclaimed "Library of Us." Presented as part of the Faena Arts program, this second monumental library, informed by Devlin's own reading, presented an impressive library collection, an island of knowledge, sitting within a reflecting pool.

Amid a flurry of events, dinners, and activations, MAWD's Head of Business Development & Marketing was able to connect with friends and colleagues, both old and new. Highlights include meeting with Kais Zaiane, Head of Global Business Development at GAGGENAU for an intimate event at GAGGENAU's Miami Showroom. Gaggenau hosted a three-Michelin-star culinary experience, blending artistry and gastronomy, and showcasing how design thinking extends beyond objects and spaces into the realms of taste, ritual, and performance.

MAWD was also happy to meet with the team at Technogym for “Design to Move,” the exclusive US showcase of the exhibition where Technogym reimagines their iconic works as new sculptural symbols of movement, design, and wellbeing. On the art and design side, it was wonderful to see new works debuted by Jose Schnaider of the Mexico-City based Sten Studio, and the works of visual artist Kenny Nguyen at Untitled Art Fair. Sten Studio continued its exploration of natural stone through a contemporary lens, showcasing onyx and mineral works that blurred the line between art and collectible design.
