Built to Last: Rethinking Design Through Sustainability

In this panel event, sustainability experts discussed how architecture, interior design, and urban planning can converge to improve the lifespan of buildings and materials.
MAWD's New York Studio Lead Shelley Baxter joined an expert panel to discuss sustainability, with a focus on designing materials, interiors, and buildings that are built to last. The event was hosted by Ferreira de Sa and ICG Italia. Moderated by Carlos Cerezo Davila, Global Director of Sustainability at KPF, additional panelists included Antony Cestra of Studio Antony Cestra, Silvia Vercher of the Urban Design Forum, and Ambar Margarida of Spacesmith.
The conversation discussed how manufacturers, architects, interior designers, urban planners, developers, and governments can work together to prioritize both sustainability and longevity. Focus was given to the lifespan of raw building materials, in addition to new ways that these materials can be repurposed after demolition.
It was fascinating to learn about local governmental initiatives that can encourage built sustainability, including tax benefits for carbon neutrality or offsetting achievements. Additionally, panelists compared international standards between the US, UK, and EU in terms of certifications for buildings, like LEED, WELL, and BREEAM.
